What is Claude?

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant, built around a focus on careful reasoning, natural writing, and very large context windows. It's the model professional developers and writers reach for when output quality matters more than having every bell and whistle.

Claude's 200K-token context means you can drop an entire codebase, a contract, or a long report in and have it reason over the whole thing. The Projects feature keeps reference material and instructions persistent, and Artifacts renders code, documents, and small apps side-by-side with the chat. It's less of a Swiss-army knife than ChatGPT and more of a precision instrument.

Benefits

  • Best writing quality
Claude's prose is the most natural of any major model — less robotic, fewer clichés, and it follows tone instructions closely. Great for anything a human will actually read.
  • Exceptional at coding
For real-world software work — refactors, multi-file changes, debugging — Claude is consistently rated at or near the top, and Artifacts let you preview code instantly.
  • Massive 200K context window
Paste a whole codebase, book, or set of documents and Claude actually uses all of it. Long-context recall is noticeably better than ChatGPT.
  • Thoughtful, nuanced reasoning
It's better at admitting uncertainty, weighing trade-offs, and handling ambiguous instructions instead of confidently bluffing.
  • Clean, fast interface
Projects, Artifacts, and a distraction-free UI make it pleasant for long working sessions.

Disadvantages

  • No native image generation
Claude can read and analyze images but can't create them. If you need AI art or graphics, you'll pair it with Midjourney, DALL-E, or another tool.
  • Free tier hits limits fast
Heavy free-tier sessions get rate-limited within an hour or two, which nudges serious users to Pro.
  • Fewer integrations
The plugin/extension ecosystem is smaller than ChatGPT's — no GPT Store equivalent, fewer one-click third-party connectors.
  • No always-on web browsing by default
Web search exists but is less central than ChatGPT's; for live, citation-heavy research Perplexity is often quicker.
